Learn About Nutrition & Healthy Eating

Learn More

My name is Julian Stone, and I am a personal trainer that has personal experience of losing more than 100 pounds. Learning about nutrition and the foods that we eat is an important part of living a healthy life.

Step 2: Learn About Nutrition

To lose weight, you need to consume less calories than your body needs. Or to put it a different way, you need to burn more calories than you are eating. Learn About Nutrition is step two of my lose 100 pounds guide. To learn more about why calories are important to your diet, please read more about what is a calorie? Having a basic understanding of nutrition is an important part of trying to lose weight. If you have no idea what the information on food labels actually means, you are never going to be able to make informed decisions about which foods you should be eating.

Understanding Food Labels

Some food packaging will display information on the front, showing how many calories are in each serving, along with sugar content, how much salt a serving contains, and other important information that you may find useful.

Each Serving Contains
CaloriesSugarsFatSaturatesFibreSalt
542.9g0.8g0.1g2.2g<0.01g
3%3%1%1%9%<1%

This nutritional information can often be confusing, because what the manufacturer considers a serving may not be the same as what most people would actually consume. So always look carefully at the nutritional information that is listed for one serving.

Nutritional Information On Food Labels

You really need to look at the full nutritional information that is normally on the back of the packaging. This information will show the amount per 100g typical values.

GDA is the Guideline Daily Amounts for a typical adult. The important thing to remember when you are trying to lose weight is that it is vitally important to make sure that you are consuming enough calories so you can exercise and be more active.

Cutting calories is not the way to lose weight. For a lot of people trying to lose weight, it is more about the foods that you are eating, not just the calories that the food contains.

Healthy Food Choices & Good Nutrition

If your goal is to lose weight, then you really need to make the right choices when it comes to the food that you eat. A poor diet can easily lead to weight gain, and you can feel trapped within a vicious circle of poor diet choices leading to weight gain, which in turn leads to comfort eating.

Eating healthy food is easy, there are so many different items that you can choose from and enjoy when you look around your local supermarket. What you have to do is stop buying the processed foods, and start buying the healthier products, which in most cases are much cheaper.
